Some 15 years ago the incidence of treponematoses was at its post-war peak in most parts of the world. It was estimated at the time that there were some 50 million cases of yaws, 20 million cases of venereal syphilis, possibly a million cases of endemic nonvenereal syphilis, and a lesser number of pinta cases.
